Lyric Translation of “Sakala satha wetha” Buddhist devotional song

(An old incantation that explains how the very first five salutation uttered to praise Gothama The Buddha right after his enlightenment by the Yakkha Sathagira, the Asura King, Four guardian deities, King Sakra and King Brahma)

The incomparable arduous journey of trials and failures to defeat the karmic cycle of life and death must have made even the physical body to sweat in exhaustion … that sweat can’t be anything other than a rain of pearls in this Kalpa… Sun comes in every other dawn to the Bodhi tree to collect those precious pearls. In every full moon night the moon goddess comes to worship the Vajrasanaya at Hirivadunna and seek for those pearls. Knowing that those pearls have disappeared she goes to the Muthiyanganaya. A story tells once Buddha visited Muthiyanganaya after a long journey and perspired out of tiredness where even that sweat became pearls… in that moment.

Still the sound of Hevisi can be heard by the rock at Isinbessagala to honor the first sermon Dhamsak Pevathum Suthra of Buddha. Red carpets are being placed to welcome him at Rajagala also known as the ancient Rajagahanuvara. The land Ritigala the ancient Jethavanaya was bought by Lord Sudhaththa after spreading gold coins to fill that whole land to meet its value. The boat harbor where Buddha set sail to Kelaniya was once named as Gothama Thota where we now call it as Gothatuva after 2600 years.
He is the great one who destroys the bonds of Sansara. He is the one with the greatest compassion and the soul that accomplished many lives of spiritual trials. He is the one who lit the lamp in order to expel the darkness of Sansara. He is the sun in the sky of Lanka and he is a son of this mystical island.
Sall flowers still bloom at Bambaragala where once the Koliya dynasty reigned. Once dried out river Neranjana is again in action. Holy right foot print of Buddha resides at Makkama in Kalpitiya. Ramya, Suramya, Subha castles of Siddhartha were at the Delft island. The winter castle was lately named as Buddha Valauwa. It protects you from cold weather.

We still feel the fragrance of endless compassion in every path you walked in this island. Just by knowing that, we gain the strength and courage to protect the Dhamma, because we see You through that Dhamma.
(Another incantation where Gothama the Buddha was called as “Yakka” in veneration)

Lyric Translation of “Sathan Seth bima mage”

There is a land where Sinhala people dwelt for million years. It is the peaceful land for all living beings. The most precious land called “Sinhale’’ is my motherland. Everlasting Dharma was discovered in Sinhale, and protecting Buddhism is the sole duty of every Sinhalese. It is a legacy that runs in our blood. We were born to fulfill this duty, thus we never forget it.

All the children of Sinhale must remember that our ancestors gave their lives to protect this land. Buddhist shrines and stupa are the narrators of our legacy. Let’s break the barriers made of myth and get together to protect Sinhale.

Sri Lanka is the homeland of humans. World’s precious pearls are found here, thus the land is called the pearl of Indian Ocean. The lion with sward in our flag represents Gautama Buddha when he defeated the death and rebirth. This is my proud motherland. I swear I will not hesitate to kill any outsider who tries to ruin my motherland. And I will protect the pride of Sinhale.

Lyric Translation of “Goiyo Me Baiya Putha”

I brought the relics
The relics which I cherished are going up
Please give me some of it
I offer the relics (Naga King at the relic offering festival of the Ruwanmeli Seya)

Oh farmer, this is your son
He will be a king tomorrow
Oh gods, this is my little son
He is sleeping well.

My dear son, you dream about sleeping in the arms of Mahaloku Devi. You hear the soft sound of Bo leaves of the Sri Maha Bodhiya shaking in the wind.

While chanting dharma, our Gautama Buddha sailed to Mahiyanganaya via Mahaweli River. Oh my dear son, you are smiling in dreams as you see Buddha sailing to Mahiyanganaya, aren’t you?

Lyric Translation of “SakWas” Geetaya

[The song Sakwas is themed around the parinirvana of Gautama Buddha. When Buddha was extremely ill and getting closer to parinirvana, two most powerful kings of Heladeepa: Sakra and Washa came to take care of Buddha. This song is about their promise to ceasefire the internal war and their request for Buddha to delay his parinirvana. At the end of the request, the two kings perform a ritual with Sirasapadha poems in order to cure Buddha.]

Sakra: The stream of kindness, king of the heavenly divines; you taught us to rule our kingdoms according to dharma, taught us about karma. Dear Buddha, I expect the protection of your power of kindness. I will protect you and today shall not be the day of your parinirvana (day of death).

Washa: A river of sadness floats everywhere when the most precious gem of Heladeepa has fallen ill. We are the clan of Wasawarthi, who grasped your teachings. The Asuras of Ashapura have arrived. Dear Gautama Buddha, I brought herbs and will take care of you with all my strength. Today shall not be the day of your parinirvana.

Sakra: Gautama Buddha is the power of Sudewa clan and the shinning moon of Sakra’s land. I will take care of you near the Palol tree where Deepankara Buddha attained enlightenment. I will give you my throne (Pandupul Asuna) and treat you with herbs. Though we will not let you attain parinirvana.

Washa: Gautama Buddha, you are the power of Kanasha clan and Sun of the Asura land. I will nurse you near the Dimbul tree where Konagama Buddha attained enlightenment. Bath from Walave River and take care of you with pleasure. Though we won’t let the leader of humans attain parinirvana.

Sakra: Dear Buddha, your Sakradeva has come to you. I swear not to fight with Hela clans anymore. Though we will not let you leave.

Washa: Wasawarthi from Asura clan has come to you. I promise to end the fights with Deva clan. Dear lord please delay your parinirvana.

Both: We will protect the Buddha as our lives. Dear lord of the world, please delay your parinirvana.

Sakra: The green paddy fields and the wind that flows through the fields, please bring strength of life to the body of Gautama Buddha.

Washa: Buddha lies like a lion in a cave where dew cannot disturb him. The strength of Buddha’s body please be awaken.

Both: We are protecting you as our lives. Dear lord Gautama, please delay your parinirvana.

Today shall not be the day that Buddha attain his parinirvana. May he live a long life and may his dharma be protected with us for five thousand years. With the power of thirty thousand years of this kalpa, all illnesses shall be cured. Hundred thousands of Buddha’s chanting may protect him. All the pain may diminish with the power of Sutra chanting. He may remain with us. Dear lord Buddha; we take all efforts to delay your parinirvana.

The divines of Siwuhela have aligned to protect noble Gautama Buddha. Thus we perform this ritual to eliminate all his illnesses. Lord Gautama’s teachings, dedication to the nation will be remembered. We give our lives for the name of Buddha.

The Siddhartha Gautama was born on a full moon day of Wesak month. Four heavenly kings protect this land where Buddha’s charisma remains. This day Siwuhela tribes have gathered to cure Buddha and save his life as Lanka will not be the same without him.

Buddha is the developer of the Buddhist culture. The intruders from Andra Pradesh were chased away by his power. He protects ten million virtues. May all his illnesses, pain and discomforts be diminished. By the power of Buddha, Mahabiya Devi, Kanha clan, Mahasen, Shamuda Sagara, Brahmadhatta, Shamuda Sakvithi, Suraraja, Indra, Majhima Shiva’s clan, Dhatta and Duhathara, may Buddha be cured.

By the commands of Kuweni and her power, may Buddha’s illnesses go away. By the commands of Deeparaja who rules Alavi, Alakamanda, Jhathabhoomi and Vishala, may Buddha’s illnesses go away. By the strength of pure Sinhala blood, Gautama Buddha shall be cured.

Lyric Translation of “Suriyawachchasa”

Her pretty teeth like a pearl necklace behind the pretty red lips
I hear the sound of her bangles
I feel the fragrance coming form her long hair
I hear her footsteps, waliking through the rain
The day that pretty eyed girl became mine
The day I saw her for the first time
I lost my consolation as you stole my heartbeat
When I saw you shining on that dancing floor
I fell in love…. Suriyawachchasa

I heard in my dreams, the harp playing
Even the wind is flowing strangly
The day I shall see my beloved musician

Wearing charming garlands, taking quick steps in dancing
How would you hide your thoughts by being quiet, when your charming eyes speak as they wish

The beloved musician of the divines’
Who sould be with Radha
Why trouble my heart, when it is forbidden to love you

Bena Samanala mauntain is covered by the mist
I am asking the cranes that fly over the sky
To find the way to her relatives’ houses

When I hear your music, I dream about you
Sorrow shall never reach my heart, when I become yours

My magnificence dancer at the king’s council
The sound of music (Sound of Manjeera) will re-write our love story

When the love blossoms in my heart
I am dancing today to your music

When will you become my bride?

Let’s break the ban of wedding alter (poruwa)
