“Parumaka Natakasa mataya lene”

A Pre-Brahmi Cave Inscription located in Wellaveli Town, Batticaloa District. As it is said here, it is a cave belonging to the mother of a prominent “Nataka”. The term Nataka seems to be still a rare personal name in early Brahmi texts. The phrase “Nata” is found in several places. The term “Nata” is found in the inscriptions of Situlpavva and Sasseruva. Prof. Paranavithana is of the opinion that it implies the term “actor” or “dancer”.
